Scholars are invited to submit proposals for the sixth North American Conference on Video Game Music, which will take place March 30-31, 2019, at the University of Hartford. The conference organizing and program committee is composed of Karen M. Cook (organizer, University of Hartford), Dana Plank (program chair, The Ohio State University), Jim Buhler (UT Austin), Neil Lerner (Davidson College), Elizabeth Medina-Gray (Ithaca College), Steven Reale (Youngstown State University), and Matthew Thompson (University of Michigan).

The keynote speaker for this year’s conference will be composer Wilbert Roget II.

We are soliciting proposals for 20-minute presentations on any aspect of music in games, including, but not limited to:

  • The history of music in video games
  • Approaches to analyzing game music
  • Intersections of game music and other media (film, TV, etc.)
  • Critical and/or hermeneutic approaches to game music
  • Case studies of particular games
  • Game music and pedagogy
  • Ethnographic approaches to game music
  • Performance of game music inside and outside of games

We are also soliciting proposals for a virtual lightning talk panel. A virtual lightning talk will be 10 minutes in length, and will consist of a pre-recorded video that will be available for viewing during the conference. Conference attendance is not required to present a virtual lightning talk. Requirements for submitting a proposal for a lightning talk are the same as for in-person presentations.

Additional information regarding the conference:

  • Papers will be twenty minutes in length (except lightning talks), with an additional ten minutes for discussion.
  • Proposals are limited to 250 words, and should include the title of the paper, but should otherwise include no identifying information, including metadata.
  • In the body of an e-mail, include your name, institutional affiliation (if applicable), contact information, and the title of your paper.
    • Please also indicate whether you would like your paper to be considered only for an in-person version, only for a virtual lightning talk, or either. If no such indication is made, we will assume you plan to present your paper in person.
  • Email proposals to vgmconference@mail.com by December 15, 2018. Successful candidates will be notified on or around January 15, 2019.
